If you hate spending time cleaning up your audio playlist, you can let Dupe Away do it for you. This lightweight utility can identify duplicates in your iTunes playlists and folders and it allows you to decide how to deal with them. The application is capable of detecting unused or missing files as well. Its simple design and straightforward functionality are probably the best features. It takes only one or two clicks to perform any operation.

Dupe Away displays four icons on a compact user interface. Each icon will perform one of the aforementioned operations when clicked. The application will perform a quick scan, once you launch it and it will highlight one or more icons, if there are any duplicates to be found. Duplicates are identified by matching artists, albums and other details. It is also possible to match them by exact or approximate file size.

Selecting an icon will expand the user interface and reveal a results list. Duplicates are highlighted to make them easier to spot. Also, a Delete option is selected automatically for all duplicates, but you can change it to a Keep option if you don't want to remove them.

Besides locating duplicates in your iTunes playlists, the application can also locate abandoned files in your local folders. If you haven't imported one or more songs into your iTunes library, the application will find them and it will provide options for importing, deleting or ignoring them. Another useful feature is the possibility of scanning for missing files. If you have songs in your playlists, but the actual files have been moved or deleted, the application will find their corresponding playlist entries, so you can remove them instantly.

Pros

The application is capable of identifying duplicates in your iTunes library and in your local folders. It can also detect abandoned and missing files. It has a clean and efficient design and its controls are straightforward.

Cons

You can't actually remove duplicates while using the trial version. Even the most chaotic iTunes playlists can be turned into a well maintained library.
